Pillar Three

Meet Human Needs

Helping meet the needs of our neighbors — locally and across the globe, as God leads us.

Matthew 25 names plainly what discipleship looks like: feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, visiting the sick. The ministries below are where we try to make that real, in Hanahan and around the world.

Feeding our neighbors

Food, year-round

The YPPC Food Pantry is the steady center of this work, but it's surrounded by seasonal drives that keep the shelves stocked through the year.

YPPC Food Pantry

Serving clients in Hanahan and nearby areas of North Charleston. The pantry is supported through the generosity of the congregation and welcomes shelf-stable food and monetary donations from the community.

The YPPC Food Pantry partners with the City of Hanahan Police Department, providing HPD with food bags for families in crisis as well as special bags for homeless persons in our community.

Please see our weekly email update for the items needed most each month.

Christmas Food Boxes

Holiday boxes assembled for the families served by our food pantry, alongside their Angel Tree gifts.

Each Christmas, the Mission and Outreach Committee packs food boxes for pantry families so that the season’s gifts are joined by the season’s meals.

Souper Bowl of Caring

A Super Bowl Sunday collection that benefits the YPPC Food Pantry.

On Super Bowl Sunday, the youth of YPPC participate in the national Souper Bowl of Caring — turning a sports tradition into a way to feed our neighbors.

Scouting for Food Drive

An annual November food drive run by Cub Scout Pack 409, restocking the YPPC Food Pantry for winter.

Pack 409 collects food from the surrounding neighborhood each November. The drive consistently provides the bulk of the pantry’s winter supply.

Children, youth & family

Walking with young families

Each of these ministries reaches children and young adults at a different season — from grade school to college.

Angel Tree Ministry

Special gift bags for the children of our food pantry families — pajamas, socks, underwear, books, fleece throws, and a game for the whole family to enjoy.

Using financial contributions from the congregation, the Mission and Outreach Committee prepares Angel Tree gifts each Christmas season for the children of families served by our food pantry.

Hands of Christ

Back-to-school supplies and clothing distributed each August to children in the Charleston area who need them.

Hands of Christ is an interdenominational ministry that gathers school supplies, clothing, and shoes for area children. YPPC contributes financially and through volunteer hours each August.

Journey Campus Ministries

Faith and community for college students at The Citadel and the College of Charleston.

YPPC supports Journey’s work with students through prayer, financial gifts, and occasional in-person service. For young adults building a life of faith during college, Journey is a vital companion ministry.

Elders & veterans

Care for those who shaped us

Showing up — in person, on a Friday, with a meal — for the neighbors who often need it most quietly.

Meals On Wheels

Friday meal delivery for homebound seniors in the Charleston area through Meals On Wheels of Charleston.

YPPC volunteers deliver meals one Friday each month along a regular route. The drive itself is short — the real ministry is the brief, weekly check-in that keeps each recipient connected.

Presbyterian Communities of SC

A statewide network of senior living communities supported through YPPC's Mother's Day offering each year.

The annual Mother’s Day offering at YPPC supports the Presbyterian Communities of SC, whose senior living and care campuses serve hundreds of residents across the state.

Patriot Villas

Supporting Patriot Villas, a Charleston-area transitional housing community for veterans in need.

YPPC contributes supplies and volunteer hours to Patriot Villas, where veterans rebuild stability through housing, services, and community.

Around the world

Mission across borders

Through partnerships, special offerings, and a sponsored child in Honduras, YPPC's work reaches beyond Hanahan.

Mission on the Move (Honduras)

Supporting children in the Mission on the Move after-school program in Honduras — homework help, Christian education, dental care, and ongoing family support.

YPPC partners with Mission on the Move to sponsor children in Honduras through their after-school program. Sponsorship provides homework help, Christian education, dental care, and the steady support of caring adults week after week.

Thornwell Home for Children

A Christian children's home and family ministry in Clinton, SC, supported through YPPC's November offering.

Thornwell provides residential care, family ministry, and crisis services for children in South Carolina. YPPC’s November offering goes to support this long-standing PC(USA)-affiliated ministry.

Water Mission

A Charleston-based engineering ministry providing safe water and sanitation to communities around the world. YPPC fields a Walk for Water team annually.

Water Mission designs and installs safe water systems for communities lacking them — globally and in disaster response. YPPC fields a Walk for Water team each year as part of their annual fundraiser.

Christmas Joy Offering

A PC(USA) special offering supporting current and retired church workers and Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping leaders of color.

Received each Advent, the Christmas Joy Offering is one of four denominational special offerings YPPC participates in through the year.
